From Bullied to Boss
Hey there!
If you’ve made it to this page, I’m going to roll with the assumption that you’ve heard my voice – either through my voiceover demos or via in person interactions.
My voice. The number one thing strangers comment on whenever they meet me for the first time – sometimes it’s a nice compliment, sometimes it’s simply laughter. Have you ever greeted someone just for them to burst into laughter? It’s not a fun experience, but it is my reality. It has been my reality for my entire life. Okay, that sounded very dramatic. Laughter doesn’t happen super often, but comments definitely do.
At the tender age of ten, give or take 2 years, I remember standing in the kitchen with my mom. She was baking something delicious and I was telling her about my new school. I attended private school until the fourth grade & she wanted to know how I was adjusting to the new environment. I can clearly recall a young Cami bursting into tears, while trying to convince her that I was fine, over being teased about my voice. What she said in that moment has stuck with me. Sometimes people won’t like you just because your name is Camille.
Basically, there will always be someone who doesn’t like you for the most absurd reason. The reason may or may not be within your control.
You can not control the things that happen to you, but you can control your reaction.
I apply that principle to all aspects of my life. Yes, my voice is “different”, but it is mine. It was made for me. It is apart of who I am. I could’ve tried to lower my pitch until it came naturally. Instead, my voice led me to voice acting and my business was created.
So – what do I do now when someone comments on my voice? I hand them a business card.
Stay authentic, friends.
Cami
